The United States is a federal union of fifty states.

The 50 states are:

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

The 48 U.S. States between Canada and Mexico are called the contiguous United States which means they "share a common boundary".  Alaska and Hawaii are the two states that don't share a boundary with any of the other states.The term "Continental United States is misleading, because Alaska is on the Northamerican continent and would belong to the group.

The contiguous United States is devided into four regions:
the West, the Midwest, the Northeast and the South.
