Auch hier gibt es eine alternative Deutung. Die springenden (eifrigen) Herren sollen demnach Vögel sein. Vorgeschlagen wird der Reiher, weil er beim Abflug einen Satz (leap!) in die Luft macht. The heron is suggested because it takes flight by leaping into the air.

Jetzt kommen neun tanzende Damen hinzu. In manchen Versionen sind es auch "nine ladies waiting".

Statt tanzender Hofdamen waren es vielleicht ursprünglich Kormorane . Die Kormorane haben nämlich einen hüpfenden Gang. Cormorants have a distinct bobbing stance* which is why they could be the "ladies dancing".

Am achten Tag kommen also melkende Mägde hinzu. Genau genommen müssen diese mit Kühen geliefert werden, sonst könnten sie ja nicht am Melken sein. ;-)

Milking maids is a very strange present. This is why it is believed that originally all gifts were birds.
Instead of milking maids it might have been cattle egrets.

Kaum jemand käme heute auf den Gedanken einen Schwan zu verspeisen. In der Zeit, in der dieses Lied entstand, standen Schwäne aber auf königlichen Speiseplänen. Erst als sich in Europa die in Amerika entdeckten Truthähne verbreiteten, hörte das auf.

In einer französischen Variante des Liedes folgen nun acht Kühe, neun Rinder,  zehn weiße Tauben, elf Silberplatten (auf denen wohl die Speisen angerichtet werden) und zwölf Hähne.
In der bekanntesten englischen Variante kommen nach den Speisen nun Dienerschaft und Spielleute für ein Fest hinzu.

Viele Englischschüler haben Probleme mit dem Ausdruck a-laying. Six geese a-laying heißt einfach sechs legende Gänse oder sechs Gänse die am/beim Legen sind.  
A-laying ist veraltet, heute ist es üblicher zu sagen six laying geese oder six geese laying.

After sending birds for four days, why would someone suddenly send rings? And what would the loved one do with five rings at one time?
As Mike of 10000birds.com convincingly suggests, the golden rings are actually ring-necked birds.

There have been many visitors to my blog who were looking for a German translation of the famous English Christmas song "The Twelve Days of Christmas". They may have been disappointed to find only the English version posted.

There's been a lot of talk about today being "doomsday" according to the Mayan calendar. However, as most of us know, this is a big misunderstanding.

Easter Bells

Die Glocken fliegen nach Rom, sagt man in Deutschland, wenn an Gründonnerstag die Kirchenglocken ein letztes Mal geläutet haben. Das Schweigen der Glocken symbolisiert die Trauer um Christi Tod am Kreuz.
In der Osternacht, wenn die Auferstehung gefeiert wird, läuten sie dann wieder.
Mancherorts sollen die Glocken auch schon an Palmsonntag, also am Sonntag vor Ostern aufgehört haben zu läuten.
Aber auf jeden Fall sind sie am Ostersonntag wieder von ihrer Romreise zurück ;-)

In some parts of the world people say during the wek before Easter that the church bells have departed to Rome and young kids run around with clappers and rattles to replace the ringing of the bells.
Anyway, if the ringing is still done by hand, the ringer has a few days off.
Jedenfalls hat der Glöckner ein paar Tage frei.


Davon abgesehen gibt es auf Deutsch noch eine Verbindung von Glocken und Ostern:
