Leif Ericson

Heute, am 9. Oktober ist Leif Ericson Day.
In Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Illinois, Colorado, Washington, Kalifornien und der kanadischen Provinz Saskatchewan wird an diesem Tag Leif Ericson geehrt als derjenige, der lange vor Kolumbus Amerika entdeckt hat.
Natürlich hatten die Indianer schon längst davor Amerika entdeckt, aber immerhin war Leif der erste Europäer.

Äquinoktium

equinox das Äquinoktium, die Tagundnachtgleiche

Zweimal im Jahr sind Tage und Nacht gleich lang, einmal im Frühjahr (am 20. oder 21. März) und einmal im Herbst (am 22. oder 23. September). An diesen Tagen steht die Sonne senkrecht über dem Erdäquator.
Dieses Jahr fällt das Herbstäquinoktium auf den 22. September.

Bei dem englischen Wikipediaartikel Equinox  findet sich folgendes Bild, das sehr gut veranschaulicht, dass an diesem Tag überall auf der Erde Tag und Nacht (so gut wie) gleich lang sind:

The contiguous United States is devided into four regions:
the West, the Midwest, the Northeast and the South.
