modal verb

can, could, will, would, shall, should, may, might, must

Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that indicate the modality (likelihood, ability, permission, obligation) of an action.
Modalverben sind Hilfsverben, die den Modus (Wahrscheinlichkeit, Vermögen, Erlaubnis, Pflicht) einer Tätigkeit anzeigen.

He writes -  He can write. He will write. He might write. etc.

Like the auxiliary verbs "to be" and "to have" they allow subject-auxiliary inversion and can take the negation "not",
Wie die Hilfsverben "to be" und "to have" müssen sie bei Frage und Verneinung nicht mit to do umschrieben werden.

He writes. Does he write? He does not write.
  • He is writing. Is he writing? He is not writing.
  • He has written. Has he written? He has not written.
  • He can write. Can he write? He cannot/can't write.
  • He will write. Will he write? He will not/won't write.
  • He might write. Might he write? He might not write.
