Fast is another false friend.

Das englische Adjektiv und Adverb fast bedeutet auf Deutsch schnell, rasch; fest; farbecht.
Der Begriff fast food bezeichnet schnell zubereitetes und/oder auch schnell gegessenes Essen.
In German you can say (das) Fast Food, but also (der) Schnellimbiss (in a restaurant) or (das) Fertiggericht (at home).

These colors* are fast. - Diese Farben sind waschecht. Das ist farbecht.

She can swim very fast. - Sie kann sehr schnell schwimmen.

The German adverb fast means almost, nearly, virtually.

Es war so langweilig, ich bin fast eingeschlafen. It was so boring I almost fell asleep.

Mein Glas ist fast voll. My glass is nearly full.

Er hat fast alles vergessen. He has virtually forgotten everything.

In der Fastenzeit essen Katholiken kein Fleisch. During Lent Catholics don't eat meat.
Die katholische Fastenzeit dauert von Aschermittwoch bis Karfreitag. Lent lasts from Ash Wednesday to Good Friday.
Katholiken fasten vor Ostern. Catholics fast before Easter.

Für Muslime ist die Fastenzeit der Ramadan, der neunte Monat ihres Kalenders. For Muslims fasting time is Ramadan the ninth month of their calendar.
Während des Ramadan essen und trinken Muslime tagsüber nicht. During Ramadan Muslims don't eat and drink in the daytime.
Muslime fasten im Ramadan. Muslims fast during Ramadan.

Das englische Wort also hat dieselbe Bedeutung wie too und as well. Auf Deutsch heißt es auch, außerdem, ebenfalls, ebenso.
I'm going to the movies. They are also going to the movies. Mary is going to the movies as well. Paul is going to the movies, too.
Ich gehe ins Kino. Sie gehen auch ins Kino. Mary geht auch/ebenfalls ins Kino. Paul geht auch/ebenso ins Kino.


The German word also can often be replaced with daher, demzufolge, folglich. In English you'd say therefore, so, thus, after all.
Ich habe keine Zeit, also kann ich nicht kommen. ..., daher kann ich nicht kommen.
I don't have time, so I can't come.

Hochrad Penny-Farthing

Das Hochrad (high wheel) wird auf Englisch auch  Penny-Farthing genannt, weil es an die beiden britischen Münzen erinnert.
Der Penny ist eine relativ große Münze (von kleinem Wert!) und der Farthing ist eine winzige Münze, die ein Viertel des Penny wert ist.
Das Hochrad sieht also aus wie zwei nebeneinander liegende Münzen (links der Penny, rechts der Farthing).

Now you would think that Americans call it the Eagle-Dime or the Dollar-Cent (named after large and small American coins used for circulation) - but they don't. They call it high wheel, big wheel  or Penny-Farthing, too.
